Traffic Trends

Traffic patterns in Barnstable County reflect the ebb and flow of the region’s seasonal and tourism-driven economy, which brings a surge of visitors in the peak summer months and on weekends. In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the typical traffic trends. Following business closures and social distancing measures implemented in March 2020, traffic volumes over the Bourne and Sagamore bridges dropped significantly, with downward trends continuing throughout April. In May, traffic numbers, while still lower than usual, began to rebound: traffic over both bridges was down 31% in May 2020 as compared to the year prior and only 13% in June 2020, with numbers continuing to return to normal levels throughout the summer season. By 2021, traffic actually exceeded pre-pandemic levels over the two canal bridges for summer and fall months.
