Households
Reflective of the older demographic of the region, the vast majority — nearly 75% — of households on Cape Cod are comprised of 1 and 2 people. Owner occupied homes are more likely to have 2 people in a household while renter occupied homes are more likely to have one person, and nearly 70% of all owner occupied housing units have a householder who is 55 years or older. Overall, less than 20% of households on the Cape have someone under the age of 18 present, while half have someone 65 or older present. For the Commonwealth as a whole, however, nearly equal percentages of households have children present or have someone 65 or older present (28.2% and 32.0% respectively). Understanding household size and age is important in thinking about housing the residents of Cape Cod and aligning current and future housing with the region’s needs.
