School Enrollment by Race and Gender

Between the 2010-2011 and 2020-2021 school years, enrollment in Barnstable County schools declined by approximately 15%, from 26,548 to 22,685. This downward trend was most pronounced in the last year of this timeframe, which overlapped with the COVID-19 pandemic. At the same time, the student population has grown more racially diverse, with preliminary counts for the 2021-2022 school year suggesting non-white students account for approximately 23% of enrollment, compared to about 14% in the 2010-2011 school year. Despite this shift, Barnstable County remains less racially diverse than Massachusetts as a whole, where non-white students account for over 44% of enrollment.
