Barnstable County’s economy is characterized by a strong small business community, reflective of a broader culture of innovation and entrepreneurship. Approximately 38% of the region’s employees work in establishments that employ fewer than 20 people, which is more than doubled the percentage of the state and country as a whole (about 18% in Massachusetts and 17% in the United States). Additionally, the average number of employees per establishment has consistently been lower in Barnstable County than in the state or nation. Across all three geographies, the greatest share of employees work in establishments that have been in operation for 11 years or more, with approximately 75% of employees in Barnstable County falling into this category.
